Alexandros Rizos – Ranghavis (Constantinople, 1809-Athens, 1892)


Son of Iakovos Rizos - Ranghavis; intellectual; writer; diplomat. Professor of Archaeology at the University of Athens (1844-1866); founding member of the Archaeological Association and its first Secretary (1837-1851); co-founder, along with Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos and Nikolaos Dragoumis, and editor of the journal Pandora. He bequeathed a large number of important published works. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Greek Minister to Washington, Paris, Constantinople and Berlin. He was active in the founding of the Zappeion, the Athens National Observatory, the National Library and the Academy of Athens.
